Our next legs of the trip we visited London and Copenhagen where we were able to meet up with a handful of friends from our study abroad years. I also got to see my cousin who had been living in Copenhagen for the year. It was so nice to see old friends and meet new friends I also had some crazy sinus issues which put me completely out of commission for one of our days in London. Traveling for a whole month isn't always pretty, and I'm not one to spare the not so savory details.
London
My friend Ella took us to Nopi for lunch which had this CRAZY bathroom. I am such a fan girl of Yotam Ottolenghi and love cooking from his cookbooks, and without even knowing that Ella suggested eating at Nopi. It just goes to show that you can be miles and years apart, but a true friend is a true friend.
As I mentioned before, London was not my best. I felt really sick and the drastic temperature change really did a number on me(wimpy, I know). I didn't get very many good pictures and had to miss out on going to the V&A and the National Portrait Gallery , which I was really looking forward to. I did however get to meet two of Cameron's good friends I'd heard a lot about and reconnect with two friends I hadn't been able to see in years.
Cameron and I also accidentally found the MOST AMAZING cocktail bar. We were returning from grabbing dinner when it started raining really hard. I had no idea how icy summer rain could be and I was in a crappy mood. We were hustling to get to the bus stop when a small neon sign advertising "Satan's Whiskers" on a plain black building caught my eye. Always a sucker for neon, I stopped dead in my tracks and Cameron and I decided to investigate. It turned out to be a really cool cocktail bar with a speakeasy vibe. The decor was inspiring, to say the least and the drinks were mind blowing. I liked the first drink I ordered that I ended up ordering that the rest of the night, which is unusual for me since I like to sample it all. It is the type of place that you feel cool just being allowed in, I'm so glad we stumbled across it.
Copenhagen
Copenhagen will always have a special spot in my heart after this trip. My best friend from my high school year abroad is from Copenhagen. I had visited her once before and loved it even though it was the dead of winter and I thought my insides were going to freeze up. I was really excited to see the city in the summer, and even more excited for our mini study abroad reunion! A handful of Cameron's friends from his year in London were able to come to Copenhagen and my Danish BFF and cousin were already living there which made it a real party.
One of our friends conveniently has a sailboat anchored in Copenhagen which meant that was our lodgings for the trip. I was nervous that I would feel sick spending so much time on a boat, but it was actually the most peaceful sleep I've ever had. We stayed up far too late drinking, catching up. During this time of year the sun doesn't set until well past 10 pm and in never gets completely dark which was really fun since we were on vacation and had no bedtimes.
We were also conveniently around for a huge music festival in the streets called Distortion. I'm usually not a huge fan of music festivals, but this was really fun. Miraculously our large group was able to stay together and navigate the crazy amounts of people in the streets. It was so fun people watching. Let me tell you from first hand experience, the Danes are beautiful and BOY do they know how to party!
Last but not least, we went to a really cool brewery called Mikkeler. There is actually a San Francisco location, which I didn't know, but it does not have the same impeccable Danish design. I had an earl grey cider which was really delicious and not too sweet.
By the end of our trip Cameron and I were definitely day dreaming about finding a way to live in Copenhagen for a year or so...
